Day 1 - Meal 1
Today is a big day! Today is day #1 of my second round of Whole30, today is the first day I'm launching a blog, and it is President's Day so I have the day off to devote time to my Whole30 efforts.
MEAL 1 (what we would normally call breakfast)
In the past, this is a meal that I would typically just skip altogether. On Whole30, I eat breakfast every day as it is the only thing that prevents me from being starving for lunch time!
'It Starts With Food' by Dallas Hartwig and Melissa Hartwig suggests that Meal 1 should consist of "satisfying protein and fat and nutrient dense veggies" as this sets us up for less hunger, more consistent energy levels, and fewer sugar cravings. Based on this recommendation I've chosen pork belly, half an avocado, and black coffee (specific products listed below).
'It Starts With Food' also suggests that Meal 1 should should be consumed within one hour of waking, regardless of when that is (i.e., if you work an overnight shift, come home to go to bed, and wake up at 2pm, you should have Meal 1 by 3pm). Also, consume Meal 1 before your coffee. I've pictured them all together, but I ate my avocado and pork belly prior to enjoying my coffee, per their recommendation.
Now, Whole30 is pretty adamant about not weighing yourself and not counting calories. Their rationale as to why totally makes sense, but, I am a very data-driven person and enjoy all the numbers involved in a process like this. Because of this I weigh myself daily and track all the food I am eating on MyFitnessPal. See below for the nutritional breakdown of my Meal 1.
PRODUCTS
Trader Joe's Pork Belly
Before beginning my first round of Whole30 (01/02/18-02/02/18) I was pretty intimidated by the idea of having to come up with tasty recipes for every single meal. So, I did some research and found a great shopping list for pre-packaged foods at Trader Joe's that were all Whole30 compliant. Knowing there were things out there that I could buy that were ready to be cooked right out of the package made me feel a little less nervous about embarking on 30 days of having to cook every single meal by myself. The pork belly at Trader Joe's has become a weekly must-have in my shopping cart!
Avocado
Pretty self explanatory :-P
Just a Kid From Maine mug
Not exactly related to Whole30 but I wanted to give a big shout-out to a company in Maine that I recently discovered: Catalyst for Change Wear. They have the best products for those of us wanting to represent our home state of Maine. Every two weeks they launch a line of products with updated designs, colors, etc. I'm a huge fan of the mugs and have a couple more coming my way soon. Lastly, a portion of their proceeds go to an organization devoted to suicide prevention. Please check them out and support a local small business!
